North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper announced Friday that parents who need food assistance for their children during the Coronavirus outbreak can write to FOODNC to 877-877 to find a nearby free dining area. The texting service is also available in Spanish by texting COMIDA to 877-877.
Cooper said in a statement, the closure of schools means there is no food for some of our most vulnerable children. Now the easiest way is for families to find food at this time of economic pressure.
After entering their address, Parents will receive a text with locations and free lunch and meal times provided by the nearest pick-up and driver. Designed for children ages 18 and under who rely on free and excellent school meals throughout the state.
Parents can also call 211 to speak to an operator who will help them find a place to eat in their community. The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and is provided in English, Spanish and other languages.
