What is a nasal spray?
In order to transport or carry medication locally through the nasal cavities, nasal sprays are used. Nasal sprays are useful to relieve conditions like nasal congestion and allergic rhinitis. Sometimes, in order to cure some problems involving systemic therapy, nasal sprays are used. It is proven that the nasal sprays deliver the medicine directly through the nose as it can be easily assimilated. For example, to treat problems like migraine, osteoporosis, nausea, and curing diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Nasal sprays are used so that the problems can efficiently be cured as the medicine crosses the blood-brain barrier.
What is Atrovent Nasal Spray, and how is it used?
Doctors generally prescribe the Atrovent nasal spray for curing allergies, runny nose, and the common cold. It could be used along with other medicines also. Atrovent is an intranasal drug and is meant to be safe to administer to kids below 5years.
Uses of Atrovent Nasal Spray
Atrovent Nasal spray reduces the production of mucus in the nose. The mucus produced by the nose makes the nostrils blocked, making it difficult to breathe. People who always face allergies or hay fever need to depend on Atrovent Nasal spray because it can immediately clear the blockage and makes breathing easy. It should be noted that Atrovent Nasal will not treat stuffy nose, sneezing, or cough.
1. Dry nose
The nasal passages become dry. Due to a lot of irritants like dust, dirt, and pollen, the nose becomes dry. The nasal spray helps to cure the dry nose by moistening the nasal passage, and thereby the flow of mucus is facilitated well.
2. Nasal congestion due to a cold or sinus infection

Side effects of Atrovent Nasal Spray

Some other common side effects seen in patients using Atrovent Nasal Spray include headache, dry mouth or throat, minor nosebleed, sore throat, unusual or unpleasant taste in the mouth.
The important and effective ingredient in ATROVENT Nasal Spray is ipratropium bromide (as the monohydrate). It is a white-colored crystalline powder that dissolves in water.
For treating rhinitis or allergic reactions, Atrovent Nasal Spray is prescribed for children above 5 years and adults. This gives immediate relief from the symptoms.
Dosage and administration
The nasal spray usually is prescribed to be used in dosage of 2 sprays four times each day in adults and children above 12 years.
The physical appearance of the bottle
The ATROVENT Nasal Spray comes in an HDPE bottle, a metered container. The dust cap is provided to keep it safe and avoid the accidental discharge of the spray. Usually, a 10 days therapy is recommended, including two sprays per nostril.
General do’s and don’ts.
- It should be tightly closed and stored at 25 C. The spray should be kept out of the reach of children.
- Could you not keep it in the refrigerator?
- Avoid spraying your eyes.
- The patients should read and follow the directions for usage.
Warnings & Precautions
Some hypersensitive reactions take place after taking the Atrovent nasal spray. The serious side effects may include:
- oropharyngeal edema.
The patients should not change the dose or nasal spray opening. The patients must read the instructions of use.
Patient’s Instructions for Use
Firstly, Atrovent nasal spray dosage should not be altered, nor the hole should be changed.
- The plastic dust cap should be detached from the green safety clip in order to open.
- The nasal spray pump should be primed by holding the bottle with the thumb at the base and index and middle finger on the white surface. The bottle should be kept away from the eyes. Then, the pump can be used by pressing the thumb seven times now that it is primed.
- Before using the spray, clean the nostrils gently.
- Close a nostril and insert the nasal spray tip into another nostril.
- Press with your thumb at the base, sniff deeply, and breathe out through your mouth.
- After spraying, tilt your head backward for a few seconds so that it spreads to the back of the nose.
- Repeat the process in both the nostrils, two sprays per nostril.
- Now the dust cap and the safety clip should be replaced.
- After the spray is over, the physician should advise whether to continue the medication.
How to Clean:
If it is observed that the nasal tip is clogged, then hold the tip under warm running water for a minute and then dry it.
Atrovent should be prescribed by a doctor and should not be used for longer than four days of cold or three weeks in the case of seasonal allergy.
If an Atrovent spray falls in the eye, first flush the eye with cool tap water for a long time. Temporarily, the vision may be blurred, and visual halos or colored images could be experienced due to corneal congestion. The patients experience pain and discomfort in the eyes and sensitivity to light. In case of blurred vision, doctor consultation is required.
If nasal dryness or bleeding occurs, consult the doctor.
Similarly, if the patient is suffering from glaucoma or having problems such as enlargement of the prostate or facing difficulty in urination, it should be already intimated to the doctor.
