Serena Williams is hoping that in her upcoming match in Toronto, her fans there would cheer and support her. Even though she is playing against Canada’s popular teenage player Bianca Andreescu in the Roger’s Cup.
Earlier in the quarter-final of the tournament the 21-year-old, Naomi Osaka she defeated Ma, was defeated by Williams, in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. Then later in the semi-final on Saturday she defeated Marie Bouzkova.
In an interview at Aviva Centre she said that she had to better her performance in order to get back into the match after losing the opening set 6-1.
“[Bouzkava] was playing really well, she had a good game plan, and was moving great. I just had to make adjustments, mostly mentally, to stay positive.”
She has now moved on to the Roger’s Cup Final where she is facing Andreescu, who is the first Canadian woman to reach the Roger’s Cup Final after almost half a century.”I’ve never faced her but I’ve kind of become a fan with everyone cheering so hard. It’s contagious … the Bianca effect.
“I’ve actually always wanted to play her so I look forward to it,” Williams said, before looking at the crowd and adding: “Hopefully some of you guys will cheer for me tomorrow?”
So in this match we will see a great battle of youth coming up against experience.
The winner of the Roger’s Cup also known as the Canadian Open, besides getting 1,000 tour ranking points also gets a paycheck of $521,530.
The final match will be played on Sunday.
